Tampa Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is a non-surgical procedure that has the ability to treat and erase "spider veins" present on the legs. A special solution is carefully injected into these spider veins that irritate the walls of the vessel. As a result, the walls collapse and in the weeks following the procedure, the blood vessels then shrink or disappear.

Reasons for considering Sclerotherapy or Spider Vein Treatment in Tampa:

  • The desire for healthy, younger looking legs
  • Presence of unattractive red, blue or purple veins on the legs

The Sclerotherapy Procedure

During your consultation, we will assess whether you are an appropriate candidate for sclerotherapy treatment. Patients with large varicose veins and signs or symptoms of valve dysfunction will need special testing before vein treatment can be performed. Often times these patients require special ablation of the underlying incompetent veins.

In patients who are deemed good candidates for sclerotherapy, the treatment involves a series of direct injections into the spider veins with a sclerosing solution. As mentioned above, this causes the collapse of the veins, producing the desired improvement. Sclerotherapy is most successful when the treatments are spaced 3-4 weeks apart. Multiple treatments may be required to achieve the desired result and to treat all veins that are present.

Recovery following Sclerotherapy

Patients are able to drive themselves home after treatment and are encouraged to walk for 10-30 minutes after the procedure. Patients should avoid standing in one position for long periods as well as any strenuous activity for 48-72 hours after the procedure. Support stockings are recommended to be worn for one week following the procedure. For 48 hours after the procedure, it is also important to avoid direct sunlight, flying, heat to treated areas, hot baths, and anti-inflammatory medications (aspirin, ibuprofen). Tylenol may be taken for any discomfort.

Results following spider vein treatment typically appear in 3-6 weeks. Veins that respond to treatment usually do not reappear, however over time new veins may develop which require additional treatment.
