Tampa Scar Revision

Poor scars can be a significant source of patient dissatisfaction and may serve as a constant reminder of previous injury. Prominent scars usually occur following traumatic injury or surgical procedures. Wound tension, infection and genetics all contribute to poor scar quality. Scars are permanent, however plastic surgery may dramatically improve the appearance of poor scars.

At New Tampa Plastic Surgery, we offer several different options for the management of poor scars. In your consultation with Dr. Fakhre, he will help determine which options are best suited for the treatment of your individual scar.

Reasons for Considering Scar Revision in Tampa:

  • Widened and elevated scars
  • Irregular and prominent scars

The Scar Revision Procedure:

Several different surgical and nonsurgical options are available for the management of poor scars. Skin type, scar location, scar type, the age of the scar as well as patient expectations all contribute to the decision making process. In certain patients nonsurgical options such as steroid injections are adequate to improve the appearance of scars. Occasionally more than one treatment is necessary to achieve a desired outcome.

Often times, surgical excision of the poor scars is necessary so that the new wound may be closed using plastic surgery closure techniques. Several excellent options are available including straight line closure, geometric broken line closure, Z-plasty or local flap closure. In most cases these procedures take under an hour to complete and may be performed in our office under local anesthesia.

Recovery following Scar Revision:

Generally, post-operative instructions call for plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time.  Bandages are applied right after surgery to aid the healing process and may usually be removed the following day.  Once the bandages are removed, you may shower, letting soap and water run over your incisions.  Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with the surgery.  This pain can be treated effectively with oral medication. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the directions given by Dr. Fakhre after surgery.
